Number of Endpoints per console?

Hi,

My first ever post be gentle!

I am seeing a gradual build up of .msg files in the envelopes folder on the enterprise console server.

In this article https://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/63588.aspx it says that the number of endpoints reporting to the console should be limited to 4000 when using Server 2008 (which I am) but does this number refer to actually online connected endpoints or all?

I have around 6000 endpoints but never have more then about 3000 online at any given time so am wondering if I need a message relay server or not??

Thanks

Peter

  • Hello Peter,

did you just (for whatever reason) check the number of .msg files or did you experience problems which caused you to look? How many are in there and how fast is the number growing? Note that if you change a policy which is assigned to, say, 1000 endpoints and only half of them is online then 500 files will be queued until they either can be delivered or they time out.

  • Hi Christian,

Initially because of an issue as I had many endpoints being reported as out of date by the console but they were in fact up to date. When checking the envelopes folder on the console found over 7000 in there and it was rapidly growing.

Restarting the services got things flowing again (although it never cleaned up the 7000 odd files so I had to delete them).

I think you might be right though in terms of it being related to when large scale changes are made to the estate as since I posted the question it has been running fine.

I will mark this as answered.

    Thanks
    Peter
