Migrating Console to another server

I have the KB articles about the process, however it's a bit convoluted. What is the effect if I simply build another server with the same domain name, install the console and go from there? (I would take the old server offline, of course.)  Each of the clients is already coded to update from that UNC name so it would seem from their point of view, no change would have taken place.

I would also set up the Active Directory synch to get all the computer names. Just seems like an easier method than doing all of the various registry, database backups and restores.

Feedback?

Thanks...

  • Okay, this is a strange one.

This morning, following the Sophos Migration Guide, I stopped the Sophos services as instructed on the host machine. This was done in preparation of various steps. Not much longer afterwards, our UTM just died! Unable to ping it or access the unit in any way.

I had to power cycle the machine to get it back online. Sophos Support didn't see anything in the logs that pointed to a cause.

I can't imagine any scenario where working on the SEC should impact our firewall, a separate piece of equipment. Neither could Support, for that manner. It could be just one of those random events but it nags at me. Will try everything again but wondering if someone has any thoughts....any relationship between SEC and the UTM? Like I said, really odd.
