Computers showing in Enterprise Console with old AD computer name

We have recently replaced a computer in a specific OU with a new computer (name has changed):

Original name: Computer1-OLD

New Computer name: Computer1

The original Computer objects have been deleted from AD

The Enterprise console is not set to automatically sync with the Active Directory OU

I have deleted the old computer name showing in the Enterprise console, carried out a fresh "Import from Active Directory" from the same OU.  The Import from Active Directory wizard results show the correct (new computer name) but when I select "Finish" to complete the wizard the machine shows up in the Enterprise console with its original name.  Strangely when I look at the properties of the computer object in the Enterprise console the description is that of the new AD compute object but the Computer name is the old object name??

I have attempted to use Purge.exe but the computers still get re-imported with the old AD computer name.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Hello Matt,

    wizard results show the correct
the are two points where the results are shown: View details ... on the Confirm Your Choices window and View Details ... on the Completing Import window. While the latter shows all computer objects in the OU the former shows only the enabled accounts. Did you check both? Has old actually been deleted from AD or just disabled?
This does not explain the description weirdness though but I wanted to ask anyway. And new is already in AD but after the import not in SEC?

  • The first section of the wizard "View Details" is greyed out and states "0 new computers".  The second section shows 3 new computers with the full CN value and path and the correct name of the new object.

Has old actually been deleted from AD or just disabled? - Yes the old AD computer accounts have been "deleted" NOT "disabled"

And new is already in AD but after the import not in SEC? - Yes that's correct

    Thanks for your assistance

  • Hello Matt,

I don't use any of the AD imports so I can comment on their "everyday" behaviour. Apparently the "preview" and the actual import don't use the same logic but I'd expect that the latter shows what's imported.
I trust your word but seeing is believing [:)]. Could you perhaps import these three new computers to an empty group and show the results (sufficiently but not completely anonymized) in the second View window (note you can select/copy with a right-click) as well as the Computer Details tab from SEC for this group? And BTW: The new names don't appear elsewhere in SEC?

  • Even though I deleted the old names from the synced OU they still existed under root level "All Computer" view.  Once removed from here I was able to re-import with the correct names showing.

    Many thanks for your assistance
