There is an error in XML document (1, 1).

When running "databackuprestore.exe -action=restore -datasourcetype=securesource" I get the following error:

There is an error in XML document (1, 1).

Build FAILED.

I have been searching online and I have called support and opened a case and have had no call back and no luck after sitting on hold for almost an hour each time I call. I previously had a problem that had the SecureSource failing to load when making a backup but  uninstalled SEC according to the migration document I have and installed it again without error.

I checked every XML file in the backup folder and have verified that there are no errors. I'm not sure what is going on and would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks!

  • Hello SethOlsen,

    -datasourcetype=securesource
    obviously not a copy/paste of your command [:)]. A typo, perhaps a payback for the one in DataBackupRestore which consistently speaks of SlientMode [;)] ...
    Joking aside, the XML document in question is SEC_SecureStore.bak, the (1, 1) gives the position of the error (line, offset), in this case the first character - looks like it's not   <   (note that an empty file is indicated by (0, 0) as error position).
    Can't say what happened to your backup though.

  • So, when I looked at it and realized it wasn't an XML document, and why it didn't export as an XML with using the DataBackupRestore.exe tool I don't know, but I looked on the old server and found the backup I took before I migrated. I must have accidentally overridden the old backup with a new one.

    So, the new file content is as follows (I replaced the strings with "_"):

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <store xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns="http://www.sophos.com/xml/msys/privatestore.xsd">
    <ss>
    <s n="1______________________________ " v="Qn_________________________________________________9" />
    <s n="1______________________________ " v="Qn_________________________________________________9" />
    <s n="1______________________________ " v="Qn_________________________________________________9" />
    <s n="1______________________________ " v="Qn_________________________________________________9" />
    <s n="1______________________________ " v="Qn_________________________________________________9" />
    </ss>
    </store>

    I still get the same error, even though it has the < in the (1, 1) position...unless it is pointing to a different file instead of the one in the backup folder.

  • Hello SethOlsen,

    maybe my wording wasn't clear, I did not allege that SlientMode is a typo on your part - guess I should have said for the one Sophos made in DataBackupRestore

    pointing to a different file
    first of all, the name is the one from Sec.xml, tag <SecureStore> in ...\Enterprise Console\MetaData\ thus an Explorer should find all candidates. Process Monitor will show you the actual file with its full path (note the file is read by MgntSvc.exe, not by DataBackupRestore). Or make a backup (no pun intended) of SEC_SecureStore.bak, delete its contents (so that it has size 0) and save it. If the error is now (0, 0) that's the one used. The less-than (used to call it pecking chicken, left) should be a "safe" symbol (if it looks like a less-than it is a less-than).
