Cannot Open Sophos Enterprise Console

Hi all

Our Enterprise Console was on version 4.5 and i started the upgrade process to 5.1 and then to 5.4

However when I open my Enterprise Console I get an error reading "You cannot connect to the Management Server"

I clicked on advance and got the following info:

Class not registered

----- [outer exception] -----
   -- error: 0x80040154
   -- facility: Custom (Defined by the interface)

   at struct IUnknown *__cdecl bl::SystemEnviroment::CreateInstanceOnServer(const struct _GUID &,const struct _GUID &,class std::basic_string<wchar_t,struct std::char_traits<wchar_t>,class std::allocator<wchar_t> >)
   at class ATL::CComPtr<struct ISMT_CoreServices2> __cdecl bl::CreateCoreServices(const class std::basic_string<wchar_t,struct std::char_traits<wchar_t>,class std::allocator<wchar_t> > &)
   at int __cdecl Run(int,class bl::CommandLine,enum bl::ConsoleType::Type)
   at int __stdcall wWinMain(struct HINSTANCE__ *,struct HINSTANCE__ *,wchar_t *,int)

Can anyone please assist with this message?

Thank you

  • Hello RudiScott,

    my Enterprise Console
    the local Console on the management server? Is the Sophos Management Service started? Please check also the Windows Event Log for associated events.
    If a remote console - has it been upgraded? If you did migrate to another server, does the console attempt to the correct server, are there any firewalls involved which might not have the necessary configuration?

  • Hi Christian,

    Thank you for your response.

    We have not migrated servers, just updated on the same server the old Enterprise Console was installed & configured.

    I went through the services and found numerous Sophos services but no Sophos Management Service?

    I am not sure if I missed anything, but the upgrade process was rather simple, just asked if wanted to upgrade and click yes. The rest just installed and said i needed to reboot which i did.

  • Hello RudiScott,

    sorry that I did not respond earlier but I've been away last week. Could you meanwhile resolve the problem?

    just updated on the same server
    which OS? Just wondering as IIRC SEC 5.4 requires minimum 2008/SP2 or 2008 R2/SP1 and only the former is supported for SEC 4.5. So, is the server indeed 2008 SP2?

    no Sophos Management Service?
    I'd be surprised that you'd miss it if it's there. OTOH it shouldn't be completely absent after a seemingly successful upgrade. Just for information, it should look more or less (depending on licensed features and policies) like this:

    Services with a hatched background belong to the Endpoint product, the rest (except for the Message Router) to the management server. Did the console open after the upgrade to 5.1, and did it request a reboot after both the 5.1 and 5.4 upgrade? It should be safe (read: shouldn't make things worse) to re-run the 5.4 installer. You do have (at least the 4.5) backups?
