Reinstall Enterprise Console on different Server

Hi Christopher, 

I have recently performed a Server to Server Migration of version 5.2.1 R2. SEC was installed on a Windows 2003 server. Migrated to a Server 2012. I had followed the Server to Server Migration Guide. I would recommend following this guide closely. Guide can be downloaded from the Sophos Website. 

I would take a snapshot of the server prior to starting.

The only issue that I came across was running the database restore script.  Come up with an error but follow KB 121755, this will take you through the process of downloading the TRS.bat file.

first of all, thanks for the info. But i was thinking about a different approach. My idea was to

First uninstall Puremessage and then Sophos completely on the old server.

Then migrate the exchange data to the new Server.

At last, installe Sophos and then Puremessage on the new server again.

I don't have a lot configurations or other adjustments so my thinking was that it would be wiser just to make a clean uninstall and then a clean install.

But, as i said, it's just my thinking. I really don't know if it's a bad idea or not.

I looked into the migration guides i found. But all there target the scenario when you're migrating from 5.1.0 to 5.1.0.

Afaik i need at least 5.2 to run it on server 2012 R2. So i tried to find a guide for that but didn't find any. Is there a guide for that scenario or can i just use the 5.1 migration guide?

I'm not sure I understand correctly what you're up to [:)]. To clarify, migration means you're moving the existing installation to another server (could be the same physical machine if you reinstall the OS, same version or upgraded). If you install a higher version of SEC or PM it's an upgrade. The latter is - at least in case of SEC - normally just running the installer. While migration and upgrade could be done in one go it's better to do it in two separate steps - either migrate->upgrade or v.v. .
You could upgrade to any SEC version up to 5.3 on the 2003 and then migrate.

whatever you do, an uninstall is only necessary if you continue to use the old server. With clean install you mean you want to start from scratch? As far as SEC is concerned it'd be a good idea to reuse the certificates. A possible scenario is as follows: Install SEC (preferably 5.4) on the new server (while the old is still running). Set up the basic configuration (updating, deployment shares, policies), protect the server. If everything works shut down the old server and create an alias which points to new. Can't say though if this could also work with Exchange/PM and how and when to squeeze in PM (if you want to have it on the same server).
