Daily Bandwidth Consumption data needed

Hello All,

Need your help guys, I have network, where it will use 128KBS only. Could you please help me on Sophos AV, how much bandwidth consume on daily basis for the latest updates. Or please suggest me any of the AV product, which will use very less bandwidth. Thanks in advance.

  • Hello yans112,

which OS, and which of the Sophos AV  (Home, Cloud, Console, UTM) you referring to?
Daily updates are some 100k (the total usage depends on how often a check is performed), monthly updates several 10M, and the less frequent version updates around 100M.

  • Hello Christian,

    Thanks for your mail.

Its Console (to manage the clients), We've very less quantity of clients less than 100 clients with a different Domains.

We would like to configure a couple of Update managers to reduce the bandwidth and planning to remove the secondary update manager directly website to some other update manager (Some Win Server as a update manager)

We have 2012 servers and planning to configure a couple of update managers to save the bandwidth, for download the latest dat file locally.

Please correct me, if i am wrong. Would you like to suggest me anything upon the same.

  • Hello yans112,

you have actually links that slow? Anyway, a local SUM (for a few clients not necessarily a server grade OS) will save you bandwidth. If it's the site to site links (perhaps VPN) that are slow but the uplink at the remote sites has reasonable bandwith it might be expedient to let the remote SUMs update from Sophos.

  • Hello Christian,

Great to see your reply. We have a couple of clients. In a X client, the site itself is 128 KBPS link they are maintaining it (APAC Region). Due to that we're crushing out.

As i mentioned in the above, i can maintain a couple of SUM's and from SUM's i can get the latest dat files to the clients. Only the Primary update manager would be contacting the Direct Sophos Site for the latest .dat files.

As you mentioned in the above. I think, it will work out with the less bandwidth of 128 Kbps as well Right ?

  • Hello Yans,

it's not a latest .dat, but .ide files (although a SUM's download mechanism downloads all files in an encoded version with extension .dat and XML metadata), size varies from 1k to 70k+. Updates are made available every few hours - you can set an update interval from 5 to 1440 minutes though. It's advisable to schedule or control via subscription the larger updates (they'll take many hours at this speed) though.
