Scanning the server running Management Console

Does Sophos anti-virus need to be installed on the server that is running the Management Console?  I want to scan this computer, but when I try from the console I get a message to the effect that it is suspected the scan won't run .

    Hello Mike Smith,

    the SEC installer contains the management components but not the endpoint software (if you view its Computer Details you'll see that the Anti-Virus version is blank). Your management server must be "protected" like any other endpoint. Apparently this is not stated in the SEC quick startup guide.
