Installed SEC Changed Server Name possibly causing problems

Hi.

Our old Sophos Server Died...

We put in a new one, but the person that did it gave the PC a silly name before installing Sophos.

We changed the name to match the old server, and have reinstalled 5.3.1 over the top of a 5.3 install.

BUT It basically doesn't work, it can see the clients, but it cannot talk to any of them when you try to update them from the server you get an orange Arrow and no more it's as if they cannot talk back to the correct port on the server.  If i go to ipaddress:8192 it says page doesn't exist but on another sophos server on another site going to ipaddress:8192 brings up some meaningless looking data that I presume is from sophos.

But the Sophos Update Manager doesn't seem to be working.  I tried uninstalling it, but it failed saying Installation Cannon Continue SILLYCOMPUTERNAME is not a valid domain name.

  • Hello StephanieGelder,

did you restore a database backup from your late server after installing SEC on SILLYCOMPUTERNAME? On second thoughts - renaming the SEC server is not supported, and as there seems to be more than one issue a clean install would probably be the best solution.

  • Thanks.

I'll probably go with that uninstalling and then reinstalling.
  • Hello StephanieGelder,

    uninstalling and then reinstalling
didn't you say you can't uninstall? Even if you manage to uninstall (perhaps by assigning the original name) some debris will likely be left behind - this could cause issues. If possible you should use an "unspoiled" system.

  • I'm now stuck part way haha :)

I tried changing the name of the server back to the "silly name" it had and that has now got me past that error message within Sophos Update Manager so now I get a different message saying it's in use by the Sophos Management Server. I've uninstalled the Front end Console and the database so I'm down to these two and the SUM Says it will uninstall except that the SMS (Sophos Management Server) is using it...

When I go to uninstall the SMS it goes through the uninstall but just seems to do nothing. It goes uninstalling and then just disappears from the screen. So half uninstalled / half installed :)
