Can Sophos (SEC) block portable applications? Ex. BitTorrent portable, Firefox portable app.

We are able to block file sharing application (Utorrent, BitTorrent) but it seems some of the users are still able to use it by using portable exe. Is there a way to block it?

Thank you in advance.

  • Hello jgs-av,

first of all, there's normally a specific detection (like Firefox Portable) for "official" portable versions or the detection works with all builds. If you think an already controlled application is not detected please use the Query form, to suggest some not-yet-controlled application the Application Control Request.

You're likely referring to "custom builds" (dunno how they "hide" the application but apparently it works), as you said portable.exe - please have a look at the USB Program Launcher Application type.

  • Hello jgs-av,

Christian is correct about how application control can be configured. As for the "Custom builds" the blocking of a modification of the original release of a program was never an intended feature. Application control was design to block the starting of legitimate programs, and not files that have been specifically modified to work around Application Control.
