Upgrade Questions

Currently my company uses Sophos EndPoint Security and Control version 10.3.

We have a server set up with the Enterprise Console.  I started using Sophos a year ago when I hired on with my current company.

The Server pushes out updates to all clients at all locations.  We can control the Sophos Firewall via the Enterprise console, Application control, Web Control, etc..

My questions are:  How do I determine if I should switch to UTM?  Do I need UTM and a SG hardware Appliance or can I just stick with installing software on Servers?

We are looking at upgrading and getting the entire suite.  Endpoint protection, Mobile Control, SPAM Filtering, Disk Encryption...etc.... and I'm just trying to clarify if I only need a Software upgrade or do I have to switch to an appliance.  If both are options, is it better to go with an Appliance and if so, how do I know which one(s) to get?

I'm a little confused on the whole UTM and SG appliances.  If we get UTM, do you also need SG's?  Do I have to get RED devices for my remote locations even though they are connected via VPN through Metro Ethernet?

Does UTM replace what I currently have or is this a different product?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated

thank you in advance

  • Dear Ken,

Speaking for only Endpoint Control, the SEC will give you a much better granularity than our UTM. If you have a handful of devices which you want to manage, then UTM is the preferable way.

For SPAM Filtering, our UTM is very robust and gives you an all-round protection from SPAM, Bulk and suspicious attachments. For even better filtering(and 100x granulity), our dedicated appliances(and yes, they come in black) might help as well. You can deploy virtual Email Security Appliances as well.

What have you implemented currently as a firewall? If you employ our Sophos UTM(virtual or hardware - totally depends on the number of users and your preference), most of your requirements will be met.

For Mobile Control and Data Protection, we do have separate suites. UTM might not help you with these.

    Thanks,

We use SonicWall Firewalls for our "hardware" firewall. I enable the Sophos Firewall as well for our Laptops.
I also use thirdparty Wireless Access Points and their respective management system (Ruckus)..

Bottom line, we are coming up on renewal and my manager said we are going to be deploying the entire suite of Sophos yet we are going to build out new servers so I am needing to spec out the requirements for Enterprise Console, Mobile Control, Disk Encryption, SPAM Filtering, Application Control, etc... I was under the impression that UTM was the "hardware" version of Sophos, guess I totally misunderstood...
