sophos management host not starting

I upgraded enterprise console from 5.0."something" to 5.2.1  all the services are running (and the logviewer.e. shows activity after the upgrade).  clients are able to connect and update as normal.

We have a single 2008 x86 server (virtual) that runs an sql express + enterprise console.  the "sophos management host" service will not start, immediately I get error 1053 when I click start.  As before, the message routing and "management service" will both restart happily.

There are no apparant "return value 3" errors in the logs after upgrading, nothing else appeared to go wrong.  Even viewer shows nothing useful, just a single ID7000 in the system log:

"The Sophos Management Host service failed to start due to the following error:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

Nothing in the application log.

Any ideas on getting the host service running (so I can open the console)?

  • Hello kk20,

have you got it running yet? AFAIK the Management Host writes to logs in %ProgramData%\Sophos\ManagementServer\log\ and at startup to the FrontEndService.log - does it get that far?
