On-access scanning not available because of problems during kernel support compilation.

Today I downloaded and installed sav-linux-free-9.tgz. Installation was problem free. I accepted all defaults during install on Xubuntu 16.04 LTS. After install was successful I ran savupdate. Below is the response that I got with the update:

Updating from versions - SAV: 9.12.3, Engine: 3.65.2, Data: 5.30

Updating Sophos Anti-Virus....

Updating Talpa Binary Packs

Updating SAVScan on-demand scanner

Updating Virus Engine and Data

Updating Talpa Kernel Support

Updating Manifest

Selecting appropriate kernel support...

On-access scanning not available because of problems during kernel support compilation.

Update completed.

Updated to versions - SAV: 9.12.3, Engine: 3.67.3, Data: 5.37

Successfully updated Sophos Anti-Virus from sdds:SOPHOS

After getting this message I rebooted and tried to download anti-virus test files from www.eicar.org. I immediately got a Sophos warning that the files were infected and I cancelled the download but I know that on-access is now working. There seems to be a problem with on-access scanning after a manual update. I did not test the system right after the manual update so I don't know for sure if the error message is accurate without a reboot. Do you know what is going on? I'm not really worried because Sophos seems to be working fine and I only planned to do the manual update right after the install.

Thanks.

  • Hello Gary Me,

you should also get the on-access status with sudo /opt/sophos-av/bin/savdstatus, testing with EICAR is a good idea.
Might have been a glitch. If Talpa support can't be provided you should get a notification already during install. The problems should have been recorded in the /opt/sophos-av/log/talpaselect.log. As new runs are appended you'll also see the result of the latest attempt (should show success if on-access is now indeed running).
