Service "Sophos_Web_Control_Service" crashes and restarts on various servers

Hello dear Sophos gurus,

I have a question regarding the service "Sophos_Web_Control_Service".

We monitor a bunch of servers from the customer  via Check_Mk and this service constantly crashes and restarts a minute later. (Like once a week on different servers)

My question: Is it an important service? (Web Control is executed by the UTM itself and not by the server endpoint agent, or am I wrong?)

And is it ok for me to remove it from the monitoring, because one minute downtime for this service shouldn't be a security risk?

Thank you very much for your answers and thoughts!

  • Hello Simon Kreutle,

I don't have a UTM so I can answer only from the Endpoint view. BTW: Are your endpoints managed by the UTM or SEC?
First of all, the Web Control Service shouldn't crash (is there any useful error information?) and furthermore AFAIK it isn't configured for automatic restart. Ideally the cause for the crash should be investigated.

Web Control is executed by the UTM itself
If it's enabled on the Endpoint it's (also) executed on the endpoint, please see chapter 11.4 in the Administration Guide for details. Arguably (depending on your network setup) it's not necessary for the servers (as they likely won't roam [:)]).
