Escaping special characters when preconfiguring ESC for OSX?

We want to preconfigure the update settings for our Sophos Endpoint Security for Mac OS X as described on this page: https://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/119744.aspx

However we think it may not be working properly due to special characters in the password for the service account we want to use.

How do we "escape" those characters? We tried enclosing it in double quotes but that did not work.
