Sophos Disk Encryption Failing to Reboot after Initial Install

I've been having recent trouble with some HP Revolve 810 Laptops. These laptops are brand new out of the box and I use Windows Deployment Services to install our image of Windows 7 Pro 64bit OS.

The laptop starts normal after the image is installed and I proceed with the rest of the configuration. The very last two steps are installing Protection Software and Encryption Software.

The Protections Software is installed via the Sophos Enterprise Console. The install seems to take place normally and after a reboot and some time sitting and thinking, the Enterprise Console confirms that everything is A-OK. I then proceed to the Encryption Software, and this is where things take a turn for the absolute worse.

The Encryption Software is pushed via the Sophos Enterprise Console. The install seems to go on normally and the client computer pops up a message asking me to reboot the system. I do so and these issues follow:

The client gets to the Sophos Safeguard is starting screen...

The client moves onto the white screen with a gear icon in the bottom corner and then freezes...

I reboot...

The client moves onto the white screen with a gear icon in the bottom corner. It then goes to a blank screen and freezes...

I reboot...

The client moves onto the white screen with a gear icon in the bottom right corner. It then goes to a blank screen and freezes...

I reboot...

The client moves onto the white screen with a gear icon in the bottom right corner, the screen begins to fade to black, then stops and sits at the gear icon for a few moments longer. The screen returns to the Sophos Safeguard is starting screen. It then transitions to a blank screen with the mouse cursor frozen in the middle of the screen. The entire screen is frozen.

I reboot...

At this point, any one of the above scenarios I have mention can occur, and ultimately, the computer locks up and is unusable.

My only option is to reimage the laptop and start over.

Thoughts on what is going on?

  • Hello CBeyer,

you've successfully installed SDE on other laptops, haven't you? Is this issue with all of the 810s or only some of them? They might need specific POA settings (which can be changed using hotkeys). Anyway, AFAIK you can't modify the CID and even if you'd find a working combination you'd have to contact Support. So I guess it's better to take this directly to them.
