Data Control & Windows 8

Hello all :)

Just a quick and potentially novice question. I've implemented a rule in Data Control policy to monitor all office docs being moved via removable media or sent by email. Enabled the policy on my machine, the test subject and then proceeded to process docs to trigger alerts. Just to try and get a better understanding of how the policy works and what it can do.

I did get an alert asking for confirmation when trying to attach a document to an email which is great and just what i wanted. However upon trying to save, copy or move anything to USB drive i have attached I get a warning saying the process must be done through windows explorer.

So i found and read up the instructions on policies, their actions and realised that once enabled the policy will enforce users to action doc movement insistently through windows explorer and disable in app saving to USB for example.

I can understand why this is done and am willing to work with is as a procedure. My issue comes that even if I try doing something purely through windows explorer on my Win8 machine I STILL get the error and cancellation of the copy command. Is this a bug with the OS version or am I missing a simple tick box somewhere.

Cheers

  • Hi,

Is detours (www.sophos.com/.../112099.aspx) being loaded into the processes?

You could test with a tool such as Process Explorer to see if the sophos_detoured_x64.dll or sophos_detoured.dll is loaded by the processes.

    Could this be the issue:

  • Hi Jak,

That's spot on! I disabled 'Secure Boot' on one of our devices and Sophos Data Control worked as expected and as it does on our Windows 7 devices. Sophos have replied to our support case to say this will be fixed in release 'H2' this year (whenever that is?)

Until then, we will have to take a decision to either disable Secure Boot or Sophos Data Control. Neither are ideal, but i guess its a bug/limitation with the product.

Thanks again for posting Jak, the support team at Sophos weren't aware of this at all until i sent them the link you sent me.
