Data Control Blocks all transfers when not using Windows Explorer

We have Data Control enabled in our setup and found that when trying to create Norton Ghost backups to an external drive, when Data Control was enabled, Sophos would block the transfer with the following error:

"The user tried to save or copy a file to a storage device without using Windows Explorer."

Is there a way to disable the Data Control from checking this yet still having the other features available? It affects other software as well like our BackupExec jobs for example that try to access the external drives.

  • Is there a way to disable the Data Control from checking this yet still having the other features available

What are these other features? The requirement that the data transfer is done by Explorer has already been discussed and . So you'd have to turn off Data Control during backups which is probably the only sensible solution. What would be the use of Data Control if a user can't write certain individual files to an external medium but is permitted to carry away a complete backup?

  • There is no way around it.  It is a restriction of sophos data control (sdc).

    Other restrictions:

sdc applies to both upload and downloads for web browsers.  Can just do for downloads.

sdc applies to internal and external websites.  no way to excluded internal sites.

sdc blocks file - save as.  user must first save to my documents for example then copy to the removable storage to get the prompt to copy.

for Outlook it only works when use the paperclip to attach files.  drag and drop is not monitored.

sdc can trigger even when a webpage is just opened or accessed.

Remember sophos data control is not data loss prevention.
