It as been like this since I bought Sophos 2 years ago. Definition update for Windows Defender Antivirus fails to install randomly on our desktops. Some will. Some will not. Seems to depends on the weather for this to occur..
The only workaround I found was to uninstall all Sophos SEC components. All ready long enough. Do Microsoft Windows Defender updates manually and very easily. Then re-install Sophos End Points.
Coupled with the fact there's no way to disable SEC conveniently and temporarily, this is a real pain in the a... and a time chronophagus.
With Symantec EndPoint Protection we simply clicked on the client a very easy to find "Enable/Disable" box button and bingo ...
