Do you use Sophos Client Firewall? Please answer Yes/ No

I could be wrong but it's my understanding that the client firewall is included as part of the normal endpoint license.

I'm wondering how many customers actually use the Sophos Client Firewall.

If you have the time to add any further comment on why you do or do not use it that would be great.

Thanks in advance ...

  • Hello RBCJB,

yes, SCF is included. When it was added Windows didn't have a firewall or not one to speak of. Meanwhile the on-board firewall (WFW) has been improved though. Apart from central management SCF has IMO two distinctive features: Location awareness (which is similar to but nevertheless different from the private/public network differentiation in WFW) and Use of checksums. While the latter is useful it is tricky to configure and doesn't go too well with applications' (and the OS's) automatic updates.
It was also ported to Windows 8+ (with some restrictions) and it seems it is no longer actively developed (it is maintained and supported though). Grapevine has it that it might be dropped in favour of central management of the WFW.

  • Yes, we do use the firewall.

I am keen to layer up our security and having a non-native firewall helps with that. I have heard though that with the Spectre & Meltdown fixes, 3rd party firewall and AV solutions might become a problem as they are playing tricks in kernel-space to do what they do. Any comments?

  • Do not use it.

We looked into it but found it so difficult and unintuitive to set up/configure for enterprise use that we decided to use Windows Firewall instead.
