Server 2012 and Windows 8 gotcha updating via 3rd party file server

Hi Chaps,

I thought I'd pass on something I learned this week after deploying some physical Server 2012 and Windows 8 Enterprise machines.

I set Sophos 10 to update from our NetApp fileserver, which presents an SMB 2.0 CIFS share which most Windows clients are happy with. Server 2012 and Windows 8 are not, however, as they use SMB 3.0 and default to using "Secure Negotiation" which will always fail on a non-MS fileserver. You'll find that your UNC updates fail and you can't browse to the UNC share even though your Windows 7 and Server 2008R2 machines are fine.

I found the answer here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2686098

It turns out that there are two ways to fix this. Either:

  1. Enable signing on your third-party file server (not possible with NetApp until the next release), or
  2. Disable "Secure Negotiate" on your Windows 8/2012 clients

Enjoy.
