Sophos Central - BSOD - Breaks RDP on Windows 7 32 bit machines

Hello!

Recently Sophos Central started with all of our computers that run Windows 7 32 bit, having a BSOD on log off. As soon as a user logs off, it blue screens.

Also, when a user tries to log in via Citrix, they get "An internal error occured" Then the computer blue screens again.

These users have had Sophos Central installed for months, while using Citrix on days they are not in the building, without issues.

Recently I noticed Sophos Central Agent got updated, and that's when our issues started arising. This could be unrelated, but I am looking at this and it's the only thing that has changed.

After speaking with Sophos Support, I was told to disabled tamper protection globally, which I have, and the issues remain.

I have uninstalled Sophos Central from the troubled computers and they no longer have issues with Citrix or myself RDP'ing to these machines.

Wanted to give a PSA in case anyone else is having RDP/Citrix issues or random blue screens of death.

  • So the new SophosSetup.exe installer fixes the blue screen on logoff issue, but not the RDP problem.

Before if you restarted the computer, or logged off the current user, the computer would blue screen.

If you tried to remote into the PC in any matter, it would blue screen.

Now you can restart and logoff without issue, but any form of RDP blue screens the PC everytime.

When time allows I will be reaching out to Sophos again and will update this post accordingly.

  • I have tried this but it did not solve the BSOD problem or the RDP.

I have submitted a support case with Sophos but if anyone has anything else to try let me know!

    Thanks,

    Amanda

  • Hello Amanda,

    Which fix did you try?

I noticed if you disable the file scanner service that still fixes the problem, until it reenables itself again.

I'm currently trying to send over a memeory dump to Sophos for review.

  • That fixes it for me but it's not a permanent or secure fix.

It doesn't happen when users shut down or restart so I am having them do that for now instead of logging off.

I submitted a case with Sophos and will try and send them the dump files that I have as well.

  • Oh yes, it is definitely not a secure fix in the slightest, but if you needed to remote into that computer it's a temporary solution for a few minutes.

Great to hear, I will update this ticket as I get more information from Sophos.
