Autoupdate bandwidth hog

Is there some setting I can change so that when Sophos Antivirus for Mac is downloading updates, it doesn't hog all of my Internet bandwidth? Literally, I am unable to use the Internet at all until it finishes. This is especially a problem since Sophos seems to particularly like to update its data right when I first turn on my Macbook.

    What is the speed of your Internet connection? When I first start my Mac, I force a Sophos update with the AutoUpdate window open and the update download size is nearly always less than 100KB, which is finished literally in seconds. The exception is if the program itself is being updated, but that is rare.
