Bug with v. 9.4 and cURL?

Dear all,

Since updating to version 9.4, I notice that Sophos Web Protection no longer blocks downloads made through cURL — or at least, not reliably. For example, I am now able to type the following in Terminal, and get the EICAR test string:

/usr/bin/curl -4 --compressed "www.eicar.org/.../eicar.com" -s

It used to be that Sophos would block the download and put up a proxy blocking page.

Is this by design, or is this a bug?

  • That's very odd. Using the same command reliably results a 'block page' for me.

One of the changes for 9.4 requires that the network kext be updated. While it is *supposed* to have been unloaded and the new one started during the upgrade to 9.4, I wonder whether for you this didn't happen correctly?

Would you mind rebooting and let me know whether you're still able to download eicar.com using curl?

  • Thank you for your kind note.

I am afraid no amount of restarts ever made it work, but a full un-install and re-install seems to have done the trick. This is strange, especially as I always install Sophos anti-virus cleanly and did so for version 9.4.

All is well that ends well, although it took some hard handle-jiggling before it stuck — if you will allow me to mix metaphors for a second.

Go Sophos — and thanks again!
