Silencing an alert for a threat already removed

Lately, when my Mac starts up, Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition launches not just in the menu bar but also in the dock, and it alerts me to a malware threat that was previously quarantined and removed. Clicking through to Quarantine Manage confirms that quarantine is indeed empty. How do I stop this erroneous alert from popping up?

  • Hi Bruce,

I'm curious, do you see anything in the Scan log?

    --To Access the Scan Log--
    - Click the Sophos menu bar Icon
    - Click on Open Scans...
    - Alt-click the white space by "Scan this mac" and select View Scan Log...

This will open the Scan Log in an application called Console. The scan log gives you detailed information about the most recent scans, such as start time, what was scanned, scan configuration, any threats that were detected, etc. You should also see any errors that may have been encounted by the scanner.

  • Well, as it happens, I didn't get the erroneous alert today. Somehow it seems to have resolved itself.

Separate issues: I see in my scan logs a "corrupt file" entry for one particular app in the MobileSync/Backup folder.

    2015-08-30 12:56:52 -0500 Corrupt file: /Users/{my username]/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/c7daca8e96554301c78a0f60e82bd3d0e3a02438/787ce94fea7fd47a37e87146a1c859435cac27be

Happens every time, and show as an "Issue detected." I've tried removing the backup and doing a fresh backup—always the same result. Is there a way to tell which app this is?
  • Wed, Sep 2 and the alert is back, again immediately after first starting my Mac in the morning.. The log show no new entries since I scanned my machine on 8/30. Opening the Quarantine Manager, I see the threat listed for about 5 seconds, then it disappears.
