Error decompressing "/Library/Logs/SophosDiagnostics.gz" file

Setup

  • OSX v10.8.5 + Sophos AV for Mac v9.6.5
  • OSX v10.12.5 + Sophos Home for Mac v1.2.6

Observations

  • When browsing the console logs, the /Library/Logs/SophosDiagnostics.gz file is unreadable due to the error: Error decompressing log file.
    • The error message is found at the bottom center of the console log window.
  • All other related logs such as the /Library/Logs/SophosDiagnostics.[ LOG-NUMBER ].gz files are readable as expected.

  • Well, of course as soon as I post this issue, I find the solution.  However, rather than delete the post, I decided to note the solution in case anyone else might experience this and have questions.

The logfile in question - SophosDiagnostics.gz - is dynamically compressed and as such may report as incorrectly terminated.  This is what causes the decompression error noted in my OP.

However, the file can still be read using the following CLI command:  gzip -dc SophosDiagnostics.gz

    Apologies for any confusion.
