Help please: infected with Brontok and it won't let me install the tool.

I just downloaded the free Virus Removal Tool on my Windows 7, specifically to remove the Brontok worm that's been plaguing me. But the virus has a way of blocking certain actions on the computer, as well as randomly shutting down and rebooting. That's why I think it's the Brontok doing this.

When I open the .exe file to run the tool, it will run through the InstallShield Wizard up until the point of clicking Install. As soon as I do, the box flashes, then reads:

InstallShield Wizard Completed

The wizard was interrupted before Sophos Virus Removal Tool could be completely installed.

Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again.

Click Finish to exit the wizard.

And that's that. So please suggest how to install the tool so I can get rid of this frustrating virus!

  • If you can boot to a current UBCD you can clean windows without being affected by the infection. This is what I use when windows is too far gone. Download most recent from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/news.html / Documentation http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

    This has many great tools.

If that isnt an option you could try booting into safemode and running something like malwarebytes free or hitman pro.

Another optiion is to turn off any related services in msconfig and makesure startup programs associated are shut down, but many infections will just turn themselves on again.

Honestly if you are unable to use the sophos removal tool or perform a full scan of the system in safemode you may consider pulling your data and reloading your OS.

    Good Luck
