Malware via skype

Hi,

I am a bit new to this community hence I am not sure if this is the right spot. Yesterday I had an unfortunate encounter with a link sent by a friend on Skype that I accidentally misinterpreted as a google.drive link which forwarded me to another website. I closed my browser quite quickly as I felt something is wrong. I did not see the fully loaded website to be honest (so not sure if my SOPHOS anti-virus software has protected me). My computer seems to be running alright and I have down several scans now with my SOPHOS to see if it finds any treats. So far I got though 5 issues. I have a few questions:

1) Is there a good way to make sure my computer has not been infected? (my sophos is up to date but still there might be software it doesn't yet recognize)

2) How would I proceed to make sure to remove any issue?

3) Shall I send this particular issue to someone at Sophos?

Best,

Felix

  • Hello Felix,

    1) another AV might detect a threat not yet known to Sophos - or it might not. Of course it's possible that there is malware that a) you don't notice, and b) is not detected even after a few days. It's rare though. More important is the question why the link sent by a friend on Skype is apparently malicious or at least not what it claims to be?

    2) depends on whether there is one and what it is. Otherwise you can only make sure (absolutely sure) to remove by installing the OS from scratch (and even forgoing to backup/restore any of your data)

    3) unless you can detect something on your disk the issue is just the URL - you could submit it using the Contact Form
