Having some initial problems with free antivirus for Linux

Hello! Hopefully I'm in the right forum. I just installed free antivirus for linux and am having some problems.

#1) I don't know if theres an actual GUI for this, I saw that the web gui is no longer supported when I try sudo /opt/sophos-av/bin/savsetup - if there is another GUI how do I access it on linux?

#2)  When I scan with savscan I notice a lot of files with "Could not open " in front of it followed by file names. - Is this normal?

#3) savupdate isn't working for me. I'm trying just putting in 'savupdate' in terminal.

Seems like a good product so far, hope I can get help with these issues!

  • Hello Adam Herbst,

    1. no GUI, but then one doesn't constantly change settings anyway
    2. if run savscan as non-root you'll naturally get a number of errno 13 (permission denied), but even if you run as root there'll be a few hundred Could not open caused by dead symlinks
    3. by default auto-updating is enabled, so there's usually no need to run savupdate. Did you turn it off during installation? You can check the configuration with /opt/sophos-av/bin/savsetup. Anyway, could you be more specific w.r.t.  isn't working?

  • Well thanks for answering my questions. Nothing wasn't really working.

Sadly, it was making my system hang so I uninstalled it.

Thanks anyway. - I don't know why it was making my system hang.

  • Hello Adam Herbst,

normally it installs without problems, and if it doesn't it shouldn't cause the system to hang.
Which Linux distribution are you using (please give as many details as possible)?
