Full Home Network Security

Hi Folks,

I am new to the Sophos Home forums so please bear with me!

I want to upgrade my Home Network Security. In my household, there are Windows PCs, Android mobile devices, a BT Home Hub router and WiFi Extender. I have both WiFi and Ethernet connected peripherals. I also have a trial subscription with VyprVPN. I run Sophos Mobile Security on my Android devices. The PCs are currently running Norton Internet Security. I am planning to replace the BT router with a Linksys X6200. In order to keep tabs on my home network, I use Fing.

Now, I want to extend my use of Sophos across all devices without losing any functionality provided by my current setup. So, one question I have is - how do I implement a firewall using Sophos Home?

    You could look into the XG Firewall Home Edition - https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-xg-firewall-home-edition.aspx

    This is separate from "Sophos Home" but still a free tool for home use.

    You will need dedicated hardware or a VM to deploy it in.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    I don't have a spare PC that I could use so it would mean purchasing a new one. It's also impractical as my router is in our lounge (where the BT Infinity feed comes into the house). So that would be the logical place for any additional hardware but it would look out of place. I ask myself - do I need a central firewall or could I not rely on a software firewall running on each of the PCs and Android devices? Any suggestions?

    I understand that. I have been wanting to put in a dedicated XG firewall at home as well but simply don't have the adequate hardware to install it right now.

    If you can't use a central firewall (XG) then I would at the very least make sure everything is locked down on your ISP provided router/firewall, enable the local Windows firewall and utilize the features in Sophos Home like application control, web filtering, etc.

    In addition to the Sophos Home on computers and devices, you could just do with the built in firewall of the router and the computers (devices like iOS and Android don't have firewalls). 

    What I can suggest is on the router to change the ISP's default DNS with the one from OpenDNS (free) which has phishing and other bad sites protection.  I just use the default OpenDNS one so I don't need to create and account; just change the DNS IP address on the router ( www.opendns.com/setupguide/ ). There's also their free Family Shield version which in addition to regular OpenDNS protection also has predetermined blacklist of adult content (same setup just different IP address to refer to).  You only need to create an account and possibly $ only if you want to customize settings and tracking. Otherwise it's a free service from Cisco.

    When you set OpenDNS on the router, all the devices which connect through the router uses it.  You also have the option of setting up OpenDNS on your computer or device so that you are also protected when away from your router.

    Regular OpenDNS uses these name servers:   208.67.222.222   and   208.67.220.220

    Family Shield OpenDNS uses these name servers:   208.67.222.123   and   208.67.220.123
