Does removing an unwanted file from a zip file scan the whole zip or delete the whole zip?

I just installed Sophos on my Mac Mini yesterday morning and preformed a full system scan. Kind of scary that it came up with 69 items, though most of them were virus emails inside a Time Machine backup for a user that's not accessed on a regular basis.

Of those, only eight actually were listed in the Alerts section. One of those was an unwanted app within a zip file. I decided to Clean that one because it's for an Android device I'm no longer maintaining.

My question is this. Does Sophos rescan the whole zip file looking for the specific offending file and then only delete that, leaving the rest of the zip intact, or does it just blast the zip file completely? The machine has been running nearly an hour since I hit Clean, and I'm a little surprised it hasn't completed the task yet.
