"On-Access Scanning is Disabled" on its own and it won't turn on

Greetings, this problem happened before and at a time when it happened to others as well. First, know that when I choose the start scanning option in preferences for On-Access, it just sits at 'starting' forever. It does not turn on.

The remedy at the previous time was to shut down the computer and turn it back on. Simple enough and it worked. But it is not working this time.

I recall when this happened before that others needed to uninstall and reinstall; but I do not want to do that unless I really have to. I have read too many issues in this forum around trouble in the uninstall process.

Can anyone share another way that this might be fixed or do you think that I should just go ahead with an uninstall and reinstall? And does anyone have any idea why this happens out of the blue? I do not shut off On-Access but suddenly it is off and Sophos is not running!

Thanks so much.

I am running OSX 10.9.5.

  • UPDATE: After trying to turn on On-Access Scanning a dozen times, with shutting down my computer and Sophos a few times as well, suddenly, as mysteriously as it shut itself off, I was able to turn it on. I have no clue as to why this happened but it is working now. I am thankful for the software and thankful that this mysterious happening is over, too. :-)
