Sophos has on my Mac OS 10.9.5 so far scanned 2845336 – of 2540163 items ! How is that possible ?

so was the number exceeded or bellow the file count?

As I unequivocally wrote the file count at the time of asking was 540163 items – but despite that Sophos had scanned 2845336 items – and now 2875142 !

How on Earth can Sophos scan considerably more items than Sophos claims there are im my Mac ? ?

That is unusual. . .
I do know that the scan files can be under what it said was scanning when it's completed, but never it being over? do you happen to have any additional hard-drives or usb devices connected before the scan is in progress?

   Of course – I do have an external hard-drive that constantly back up my Mac.

That could maybe be the explanation ? 

Is the device physically connected to you computer?
Or does it sync over wifi to backup you main hard-drive?

Either way that could be the explanation.

My external hard-disk is connected with my Mac via WiFi.

Do You then think that Sophos has to scan both these devices containing a total of 5080326 items ?

It is possible that Sophos scanned both your computer's internal hard-drive as well as the external drive via wifi.
Ive heard people saying that the only way to scan an external hard-drive with Sophos if for it to be connected to you computer, so Sophos probably scanned all external drives by default when you selected a full system scan.
