So-called MacKeeper malware: failed to stop, failed to quarantine during scan

RE: OS X 10.7 (no MacKeeper ever downloaded, nor installed)

Been using Sophos for years at home on several systems no problems.  Then yesterday after working on CitiBank site for the first time in many years the MacKeeper popup appeared on a MacBook. Immediately recognized it from recent experience with colleague's system. Closed all apps and did a scan.  Didn't find anything.  I scanned a second time.  About halfway through, scan halted--still not finding anything-- with a black background message in about 10 languages instructing that system must be restarted.

I expected the worst.  I tried to shut down, and couldn't.  I tried to close the black window and the system shut down, never to boot again.  I'm rebuilding it on a clean disk.

Not much protection in evidence.

The much referred to Adware Medic for the MacKeeper malware is no longer available for this OS.

Any suggestions for future use?

Thanks,

L
