Download IDE files

I am using Sophos Free AV Linux in our organization. Recently the IDE files need to update from Sophos directly from through Internet. However in our environment we don't have direct Internet access for all server and we understand that there is Sophos Update Manager can help on distributing IDE files to other server.

I would like to ask if it is possible for us to setup one machine to download IDE files from Sophos server, and then we manual copied the IDE files to other machines which does not have direct Internet access? Does this action violate the license terms of Sophos?

Thanks.

  • Hi Ken,

This wouldn't be a good idea for the same reasons it wouldn't be an ideal situation for Windows or Mac machines either. The problem is that the IDE files are created and tested with the currently supported versions of the AV software and more importantly with the current versions of the Virus Engine. The Virus Engine is routinely updated roughly once a month, with anything over 3 months old not being supported. Any IDE copied onto a machine using an out of date AV or Virus Engine version has not been tested by Sophos and possibly will not provide the intended protection.

In order to achieve what you are trying to do the best option would to be to do a reinstall/upgrade of the AV software on these machines at least once every 3 months (ideally monthly to get the latest Virus Engine) and copy the IDE's over at the same time. Depending on how many machines you have that could be not feasible.

Of course the best solution would be to actually pay for Sophos license that includes the Sophos Enterprise Console software, then you could manage this all centrally and automatically let these machines upgrade/update from the server that does have an internet connection.

  • Hi Peter,

Thanks for your update. We are using the Linux free version and we have tested it works by copying the IDE files from one Linux server to the other one. You suggestion for upgrade is also a good idea for us.

    Thanks.

  • Hello Ken Wong,

IMO the best method would be to update from (a copy of) the local cache directory (/opt/sophos-av/update/cache/) of a computer with an internet connection. Please see chapter 15.4 in the Configuration Guide. This would not only add IDEs but update the software as well. AFAIK this should work for all (unmanaged) installations.
