how long should it take savupdate to update sophos anti-virus for linux, as it seems to be taking a very long time to update (at least 30mins now)??

Yes it was.

sorry forgot; no the updates after did not take as long.

The first update has to download all the changes from the version installed to the current version, which could be several hundred MBs. Subsequent updates should be much smaller.
