Sophos free linux tool timeouts. Still an unusable desktop product for ubuntu.

I have tried the free sophos-av again on ubuntu 14.04, having given up in mid 2015. I see the GUI has gone since I last tried it, no great loss, but the tool still stops me using my system so I'll have to give up again after many frustrating hours.

I get repeated timeouts like

"[ 874.419944] talpa-deny: Timeout occurred while opening /home/me/winmpe/drive_c/windows/system32/imagehlp.dll on behalf of process wineserver[15696/15696] owned by 1000(1000)/1000(1000) <0>" .

The problems mostly seem to occur on wine files, either opening them, or backup them up. I can't even run backups due to this problem.

It would also have helped me enormously if, given that it's a stand-alone product, there were a few more clues about how to get alerts. Sending them to 'root@localserver' or anything similar when I guess many users don't have email servers installed is no great help.

And finally, will this ever be included in Sophos Home? I was disappointed to see it is not part of that product set.

I have so far failed to find any workable linux anti-virus tools for ubuntu desktops, free or otherwise (I don't mind paying for things that work). I had hoped Sophos would get there, but it seems not. Bother.

  • Hi,

For email alerts you can configure the email server as well as the email address alerts are sent to and from.

    /opt/sophos-av/bin/savconfig EmailServer <email-server>

    /opt/sophos-av/bin/savconfig Email <email to send to>

    /opt/sophos-av/bin/savconfig EmailSender <email address to send from>

localhost is really the only sensible default for the email server.

Otherwise you can view the log with /opt/sophos-av/bin/savlog, which is the primary way to view events.

I've used SAV on my Ubuntu machines at home, and on our servers at work without any problems, it would be interesting to see how long an on-demand scan of the files that are timing out takes.
