OS X 10.9.5 Safari or Firefox cannot connect to secure server

For three months I have a problem in safari with secure sites, anything from online banking to ordering from online stores. In about one out of 5 cases of interacting with the sites I get the safari or firefox error message:

safari kann die Seite " Seite" nicht öffnen da Safari keine sichere Verbindung zum Server "servername" aufbauen kann

My translation

Safari cannot open the page "page" because safari cannot open a secure connection to the server "server"

I have tried a lot of settings and finally, after switching off sophos On-Access Scans and Sophos Web-Schutz (Web-Protection)

the problem is gone.

Is there a better solution, than switching Sophos off?

Is Sophos really causing these connection problems?

I am working with MBP 2010 17" OSX 10.9.5 all updates, Parallels installed.
