Autoupdate downloading fails to complete

Recently the download process for autoupdate frequently gets "stuck" -- the down arrow in the shield continues forever and the display window (Show AutoUpdate Window) displays "Downloading".  This has happened both on my iMac and on my wife's Mac Mini. The problem can be solved by re-starting the machine - the next update succeeds.

iMac OS X 10.7.5

Mac Mini OS X 10.3.3

  • this is almost verbatim what's happening with me. i reinstalled like BBH and got one successful download. then nothing. if i force-quit the daemon, then it stops the process but if i manually initiate a download, it hangs again at the "downloading" screen. also, if i force-quit and then do the terminal command instead of a menu command for the download, it hangs as well.

  • The former poster is correct and his/her screenshots accurately portray the problem.  The Sophos "fixes" of 1) SUDO to clear cache and 2) uninstall & reinstall are of no help whatsover, even if they fix the issue for a short time the endless download returns.  Perhaps the company is waiting for its next version to mature in the hope that will be better?

Sophos- should we try installing your beta version?  Thanks!

  • I have had exactly the same problem, the same response when I try to cancel update and the same failure of the suggested solution that ends with the "downloading.." message. I have this problem on 3 different Macs running 10:10 Yosemite. Please find a solution that works.

  • guys, try this: with the auto update window up, go into activity monitor and force quit the auto update daemon.  for me, it said "cancelling" and then showed the last updated time, which was current. so, it *is* running, but it seems to be an issue with the auto update process terminating once it's completed the update. it may be nothing, but it's something more than we had yesterday. FWIW.

*update* the process immediately restarted but this time updated and quit properly. probably won't stick, but FYI.

  • I have installed the updated version 9.4.0b1 available for download on the two affected iMacs (circa 2012 and 2010 both running Yosemite), and have found so far this version is stable, updates without problems and completes a scan without problems.  Fingers crossed (+ knock on wood) but it appears the newer version where the company is naturally focussing its attention resolves the reported problem.

  • After performing this operation I get the error that no such file exists, and the download arrow on the Sophos icon keeps on going and going. I have tried to re-start too, and that does' fix id. And of course if I try to update I get the message that I can't do it at this time.
