Cannot get the scan to quit

New iMac running 10.10.5

This is the second time I've tried this Sophos AV version: both times the system hangs (have allowed it to run for 24 hours with no advance in the scan).  I have tried stopping the scan at the primary interface box (Sophos Home).  It will not allow a quit (scan is still running) and when I click on "stop the running scan and quit" NOTHING happens.  It's like some sort of feedback loop tht does not allow me to dismiss Sophos Home.

I've tried force quitting and the 'working' icon is still spinning away.

The first time this happened I eventually uninstalled it - opening another can of worms regarding access to my account - couldn't get in without a great deal of back and forth via email help.

I have tried restarting - no joy.  This is my final attempt to get this sorted.  Absent some real help, I'm going to give up on this product.
