Shield grayed out

Hi - the Sophos icon is grayed out, and I have a message saying that 'on-access scanning is disabled'. I'm running Sophos home edition 9.2.2 on a Mac using OS 10.9.4. I've checked the activity monitor which under 'disk' seems to show a lot of Sophos activity, but under 'network' appears to show none. Can you advise?

I am having the exact same problem, out of the blue. I am running 9.2.2. on a Mac with 10.9.5. Am eager to see if anyone knows what is going on and what might be done about it.
