I think that this is where an AV like Sophos for OSX could be the most useful, as there is a raging epidemic of adware (often mistaken for malware) and relatively little OSX malware around (at least in its customary forms).
When I visit ASC (Apple Support Communities) almost invariably, when someone asks if they have a "virus" (the term not used in its technical sense, but as a catch-all for any kind of malware), or some kind of malware, it turns out that the problem is that some form of adware has been installed. These days, hardly anyone reports any real OSX malware. And there is an awful lot of this adware being reported.
I realize that Sophos may find a few PUAs, but compared to the scope of this epidemic, they are only a small drop in the bucket. Besides that, at least looking here from time to time, I haven't seen any cleanup action available for any of the adware that Sophos may find. Of course, this would probably mean Sophos would need to be able to examine and cleanup junk installed inside specific browsers, and elsewhere in the system.
Someone has written an adware removal program which works most of the time, but he doesn't have the kind of resources that Sophos could put to this end.
