VIRUS DETECTED ONLY WHEN I USE MAIL

HI ALL.  Sophos detects viruses/malware only when I use the mail app.  If I don't use it for a few weeks/months, it doesn't detect any virus.  As soon as I launch the mail app, it detects some sort of virus/malware/spyware.  I am confused and wonder what I can do?
