Removal of old Sophos installed from institution

Hi

Several years ago I obtained a copy of Sophos free from my university and it has worked well.  However, lately I have been getting an error message saying the scan cannot run.  I believe the last version was 8.something.  I assumed it was a "home edition" that was offered free through the university.  I am trying to upgrade to the newest version (9.2.2) because I have upgraded my iMac to OS Yosemite.

There was no remove Sophos program in my Applications folder, so I simply dragged the application to the trash and deleted it, then restarted my computer.  I tried to run the new installer, but I get the error message "an incompatible product is installed" and the installer quits.  I have used spotlight to search the computer and can find no other sophos files.  However, a sophos icon still appears in the menu bar on the right hand side of my screen and clicking on it gives me a menu with various options, none of which work.

I have looked in my start-up items and am at my wits end.  I have looked through this forum without any success, including trying to remove the keychain components.  They don't show up in Keychain Access.

How do I get rid of this old version?  Is that what the "incompatible product" is?  I am not aware of any other anti virus software installed on my conputer.
