Hello Sophos Community,
I am a new user of the Linux standalone version. When I try to update with the following command:
I receive the following error message:
Failed to download 'sdds:SOPHOS': invalid authentication. Please check PrimaryUpdateUsername and PrimaryUpdatePassword.Failed to replicate from all update sources
My PrimaryUpdateUsername is my email address.
Some of the responses on the community bulletin board suggest uninstalling and reinstalling. I have tried this twice, first setting the username to another username, then setting it back to my email address.
... gives the following information. Note that the latest threat data release is about 6 months old.

Sophos recommends that you configure Sophos Anti-Virus to auto-update.
It can update either from Sophos directly (requiring username/password details) or from your own server (directory or website (possibly requiring username/password)).

Some advice suggests that that I use the sophos ID. This is my email address. However, the advice says that it cannot be the email address. This appears to be incorrect advice because I tested setting it to another sophos ID upon installation. One message suggested that a new user is assigned an ID by Sophos, but this is not the case at least on this version of Sophos.
Another thread suggested that a user had selected proxy, without specifying proxy details. That person reinstalled without selecting proxy. This solution does not work for me since I have not selected proxy.
Does anyone have a solution?
Yes, I will. I expect them to answer tomorrow.
Sophos stopped the free update-service today:
So I wonder if the service can be bought.
Thank you, i would also use a paid service, if offered
They told me to contact a reseller (https://partners.sophos.com/english/directory/). Now I am waiting for response. I found this informationSophos Endpoint and Server Protection: Retirement calendar for supported platforms and operating systems about EOL cycles, thus it should be possible to buy a license. But what will it cost...
could you please inform us about the response?
I am also interested in buying a licence. Would love to learn more about restrictions of the licence as well as pricing before contacting to sales.
No reply from sales until now. Changing reseller and try again
The reseller "UTM-Shop" told me that a licence ist available für business users only: Sophos-Central-Intercept-Advanced-CSAD1CSAA https://www.amazon.com/Sophos-Central-Intercept-Advanced-CSAD1CSAA/dp/B08D711YXN 145$ or in Germany https://utm-shop.de/central/central-server-protection/lizenzen/2678/sophos-central-intercept-x-advanced-fuer-server?c=4882 151€
Far beyond my budget. And no warranty that this information is valid. So: Bye bye Sophos and hello CLAMAV with extra sources
ClamAV seems too limited comparing the sophos. File size limits, recursion limits, global size limits, count limits...Is that suitable for your purpose? Or did you overcome this issue?(Also I have got a similar offer from one of the local resellers, cant afford)
I do agree. But who can afford 145 bucks just for a family mail server@home?
So finally I said goodbye to Sophos for Linux and replaced it by another vendor - and no not ClamAV. It needed some adjustment in amavis-new, but it works fest and reliable. Now I have to pay 20$ a year, but that's ok for my family server@home
what product did you choose
Thiss is a Sophos Forum. And I am very thankful that I could use their product for free over many years. So please don't be sad, that I do not advertise a competitor in their forum.
i understand this, but after all, Sophos has not offered us any alternatives that we can easily and simply accept. You don't take customers away from Sophos because they don't have a suitable offer. You could have just made a notice here or on the website: "To existing users, we offer..." but they didn't. Can you let me know via private message?
