Full scan time in Sophos Home AV on Win10?

Doing a full scan (only type available with free home).  It reaches 69% and then stalls for at least an hour now.  I've completely uninstalled/reinstalled Home and get exactly the same result.

Task Manager shows CPU, Disk and Memory usage with the AV task having the highest usage although not 100% except occasionally for Disk.  I got the PID for the AV task and when I look at disk activity details in resource manager for that PID, it seems to be accessing a succession of different files, i.e., doesn't appear to be just revisiting the same file in a loop.  This would seem to indicate it's still scanning, but it stays stuck at 69%.  How long does a full scan typically take?  I have well under a TB being scanned.

Edit: Well of course, right after posting this, the scan % began to increase, although very slowly, now at 80%.  Fingers crossed.  Sorry to criticize free software, but a UI that has progress stall at 69% for an hour is poor design, IMHO.

  • After about 5 or 6 hours the scan reached 97%.  I minimized the Sophos window and when I later maximized it the scan progress bar was gone.  There was no indication that a scan had completed and it still says "A scan has never been run".  Have to say this experience has been very confusing and does not give me any confidence to warrant upgrading to the premium product!

  • After a two-day down time, I booted up my PC and now the local Sophos client says the last scan was done 40 hours ago -- FINALLY some UI acknowledgement that a scan was performed. There were two detections, which are known items (pskill and psexec).
