Mac File Encryption not encrypting server policies

I have Sophos FE 8 installed on a Mac running El Capitan (10.11.6).  I've set up server sync, which works, and installed the configuration file.  I currently have a single policy applied to this group for testing and it DOES appear to be applying the policy to the folder I've specified.  I see the policy in the "received policies" tab, but nothing in the locally translated path tab.

However, I get a software request to install a "helper file" which fails stating that my installed software is too old (?) and the helper tool install fails.

I can right click on a file and create a "password protected" file.  But if I put an file into my test folder, it doesn't get encrypted.  If I select it and click on the Sophos icon it says "the file is not encrypted but an encryption rule is defined for the file."

I've checked everything I can think of but I'm stuck.

As well, if I uninstall the software and reinstall, it removes the contents of the protected folder!  That's a very dangerous action.

Is it not possible to create a policy and have it apply to an EXISTING folder?  Does it have to make a new folder on it's own which is then at the mercy of the software?  I had planned to encrypt some files on my server if I can get this to work, but I'm concerned it will delete the contents in the process.

Thank you.

  • Jason,

Sounds like you are using Location Based File Encryption. You may need to install FUSE for OS X which will turn that folder into a "virtual volume" which will allow SafeGuard to encrypt its contents. FUSE does work with El Capitan, but last time I checked it was not available for Sierra.

    All the best,
