Custom Computer - No init

We have a custom computer we built that we can't get sophos to finish installing on. We always get stuck at boot with no init.

We started by trying the Shift, Shift F6 tricks to toggle modes which did toggle modes, but still we got no init. We tried hard coding NOATA=1 ACPIAPIC=1 into the script with no effect. After some more reading on the boards we have modified the POACFG file to add in the computer. The custom computer is a desktop with an Asus motherboard, so we coped one of the good entries for ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. and changed the Model to what we think it should be looking for, H170, but still no init. We then added more entries using all the variations we could think of for ASUS H170-PRO/CSM and still no init.

We found one entry in the POACFG list for Apple Inc that seems to be a catch all for Apple, so we added an entry for Vender="ASUSTeK Computer Inc." and left the Model part out. Still no init.

We did update to client 7.00.2.23 and the BIOS RAID is set to OFF.

Any suggestion?

Thanks,

Gary

  • Hello Gary,

There is an updated version of SGN 7 and that is client ver.7.00.2.35 so you may try installing this the computer and used the command syntax below for the installation of the Safeguard Device Encryption client.

    msiexec /i "\\server\sgn\SGNClient_x64.msi" /l*vx c:\log\SGNClient.log ADDLOCAL=Client,BaseEncryption,SectorBasedEncryption,CredentialProvider NOATA=1

If the result will still be the same then I suggest to open a ticket via sophserv or call the Sophos Technical support. So that additional information can be gathered in regards to that

    make and model.

    Thank you.

  • Thank you for responding. We tried the syntax you suggested and still got "no init." I would love to get some help from Sophos, but I did already open a ticket before I posted on these boards.

I responded to our ticket on Nov 18, 2016 and have heard nothing since. Is this usual for Sophos?

    Hello Gary,

Can you check your BIOS and make sure RAID is set to OFF and re-test?

    Regards,

    I then responded:

Yes raid is off. That has been double checked.

    What next?

    Thanks,

  • Hello Gary,

There's a hotkey that you can toggle and that is the Shift+F6.

So during the POST state kindly press shift key until you see message "Shift key has been pressed waiting for hotkey" and then quickly press Shift+F6 at the same time and you will get a confirmation message "Toggling ATA compatibility mode". This will all be done before the screen turns white and no init error message appears.

You have another option, and that is to run SGNRollback.exe on WinPE to remove the failed installation of Safeguard and then install the SGN client on command prompt as admin using command msiexec /i with the string NOATA=1.

For reference kindly refer to this article:  community.sophos.com/.../123749

  • Good afternoon,

As I stated in the post we have tried the Shift+F6. We can see that it toggles the ATA mode, but we still end up with no Init.

We have also run the SGN client with string NOATA=1 and we still end up with no Init.

As for article 123749, we have run:

    msiexec /i "\\server\sgn\SGNClient_x64.msi" /l*vx c:\log\SGNClient.log ADDLOCAL=Client,BaseEncryption,SectorBasedEncryption,CredentialProvider NOATA=1

with no errors and we still end up with no Init after reboot.

    Thanks,

    Gary
