How to add multiple exceptions to device control blocking?

Hi,

I just registered here only to ask You all for an advice.

My boss gave me annoying task: add about 2000 exceptions (usb) to sophos enterprise console / device control.

The story behind this is, that our company decided to block all ports for usb flash disks, and then they figured out, that there are about 2000 disks, which shouldn't be blocked...

Anyway, adding one by one is very time-consuming and I'd feel very stupid when doing it. So I beg for an advice - how to do it on the most inteligent way :)

Thanks for all the answers!

  • Hello janez kos,

    add about 2000 exceptions
and what will you do in 2018 [:P]?

[BTW: wrong group and forum - Endpoint would be appropriate]

Seriously, you first need at least the Model IDs, I assume your company wants to identify the individual devices so you also need the Device IDs. But then the question is how to bulk-add them, there's no interface. In theory (but it's anyway unsupported) you could manipulate the database - but you'd probably need more time to get it working than it'd take to enter the devices with the GUI. Guess Sophos could do it - but definitely not for free.

Just curious - 2000 disks, how many endpoints and users?

  • thanks for the response :)

    About 5000 users.

I have most of the model IDs. Thought about mmanipulating the database also, but as the very last solution :D

My superiors have contact to Sophos technical support and I hope they will do something... It's not very uncouraging for me to hear, that there is no standard solution for this.

    Thanks for the answer, Christian!
