Locked Windows workstation with Safeguard Disk Encryption

Hello Experts,

What are the possible reasons why a workstation might get locked and a recovery procedure needed to unlock said workstation?

I'm trying to recreate this situation but unsure how.

Thank you,

Randy

    Hey Randy,

It depends on the machine and what it's been configured with, entering a password incorrectly too many times will typically cause the machine to lock up (to prevent brute force attacks) and request a challenge/response in order to unlock.

Changing hardware or upgrading the BIOS/Firmware can also cause the machine to lockup.

    Hope that helps Randy!

  • Hello Toby,

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question. Do you know of any KBs or guides here in Sophos (or elsewhere) that can describe to me all the scenarios that will cause a machine to lock up?

When you said, "changing hardware", does that mean just the internal components?

    Thanks,

    Randy.

    Hello Randy,

    You're very welcome.

I don't believe we have any documentation on this as a whole as each scenario is documented individually and some of these lockups (ie: incorrect passwords) are configured via policies.
Typically the issues that will cause an encrypted machine to lockup are:

     - Entering the incorrect password too many times: The allowable number is set in the SafeGuard Management Centre > Policies > Authentication policy > Maximum no. of failed logons
    - Applying updates to the BIOS/Firmware
    - Modifying internal hardware (ie: Motherboard, RAM etc)
